Plastic is the problem. Recycling isn't the solution.
Are You Aware?
We are facing a debilitating waste crisis that affects our oceans, the climate, and our health.
- Only 9% of “recyclable” plastic actually gets recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, oceans, and in the stomachs of marine wildlife. Microplastics can be found in our water/food. The problem goes even deeper- toxic chemicals such as BPA can now be traced in human umbilical cord blood. (Web MD)
- Eating on styrofoam plates and other single-use containers is linked to cancer (World Health Organization). Additionally, styrofoam is derived from petroleum otherwise known as crude oil, which is not a sustainable source and emits toxic chemicals and greenhouse gases.
- Trees/bamboo can offset these CO2 emissions, but using this as an alternative material leads to deforestation. In the US alone, harvesting timber for industrial use clears out 11 million acres of land. (U.S. Forest Service)
The Sweeter Choice
Our products are made of biodegradable bagasse, which is derived from sugarcane pulp, the byproduct of sugar. Unlike bamboo or other “sustainable” paper alternatives, sugarcane is not harvested for the sole purpose of producing fiber/materials. The sugarcane waste is otherwise thrown in the trash and incinerated throughout the globe.
